Milwaukee

Wilkommen nach Deutsches-Athen! (Welcome to German Athens!) Milwaukee’s fascinating history of immigration makes interesting reading, but even better language learning opportunities! Even though the bulk of immigration from German-speaking German states and Austria happened in the 1840s, the German influence on the city is still felt today through the prime industries of brewing and manufacturing - and the fact that there are more Schmitts and Schmidts in the phone book than Smiths! Even into the twentieth century, Milwaukee was host to more German speakers and German-language press than the English language equivalents. Large influxes of immigrants have also arrived from Poland, Central and Eastern Europe. Milwaukee shares the recognition of having the highest percentage of foreign-born residents with New York City, when compared to figures from all the rest of the United States. The time is ripe to launch into another language in Milwaukee!

German Testimonials

"When I started my German classes I just couldn't get used to speaking it because of the different accent. But my tutor was really patient with me and after a month or so I started to get a taste for it. I'm really happy with my improvement and can't wait to learn more!"
